A “Dear Me” letter is written by current freshmen to their future self. This is a letter written BY them FOR them—no one else will read it. It is a snapshot of who and where they are at this moment.
The letter provides a fun and meaningful look back on their growth during high school, and hopefully will also be an inspiration for them to continue on a course of success, involvement, and growth!
This PTSA sponsored and managed activity has been an AHS tradition for decades!! All supplies are provided by the PTSA.
When students enter high school, they are filled with dreams for the future and excitement for what’s to come. Freshmen are also likely filled with anticipation and anxiety at the thought of the next four years.
This activity is designed to promote self-exploration and reflection and writing about them.
Students write (yes, they handwrite!) a few sentences to describe themselves: their interests both academically & outside the classroom, what is important to them, and how they felt upon entering high school. They write about their long-term goals, why graduation is an important milestone to them, what they hope to achieve, and where they see themselves in four years’ time and beyond.
This activity is completed during their ELA class in the month of September and requires no extra time on their part.
After students have finished writing, they seal the letter inside an envelope addressing the front of the envelope with their name and “Class of 2029” and give it to their ELA teacher.
All students who graduate from AHS receive their letter in the Senior Silver Envelopes in May.
THANK YOU to our freshman students and ELA teachers for supporting this activity during their class!
