Welcome to the first edition of the 2023-2024 school year Raider ENN (Electronic Network News) at Alpharetta High School. AHS PTSA is proud to publish bi-monthly newsletters that showcase our school, opportunities for engagement, and updates for our AHS families. Counseling Updates

SENIORS

Senior Advisement Meeting will take place Thursday, August 24th in the AHS Auditorium during Anchor Time.  This is a student only event.  After the advisement meeting, counselors' links will be posted to schedule Senior 1-on-1 advisement meetings.  All seniors are required to attend both the 1-on-1 meeting with their counselor and the advisement meeting.  A link will be shared with parents to view the meeting.


School Counselors' Caseloads have changed and Ms. Jami Proksa has joined the AHS Counseling Team this year, taking over Mrs. Wiley's caseload.

College Applications

Fulton County Schools is no longer using Naviance for college applications. 

While Naviance will continue to be used to research and plan for college, for the 2023-2024 school year, students will apply to college using the following platforms:

Many of the abovementioned college application platforms will allow school counselor to upload high school transcript.  Therefore, students will not have to request transcripts outside of the application platform. However, if/when needed, students can request transcripts here via ScribOrder.


LOCAL COLLEGE FAIRS AND INFORMATION SESSIONS

2023 Probe College Fair

  • Probe is an annual program of college fairs that are held throughout the state of Georgia. The program is managed by the Georgia Education Articulation Committee (GEAC), whose sole mission is to disseminate information and stimulate interest in post-secondary education for students in Georgia. Hundreds of colleges from across the nation attend Probe each year to reach thousands of Georgia high school juniors and seniors.

2023 Tour Dates


Peach State Tour

Students and their families are invited to the 2023 Peach State Tour information sessions offered in person and via Zoom Webinars. These sessions will allow you to learn more about Augusta University, Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, and the University of Georgia. The events are free and open to all high school students and their families, but space is limited! Register online today to secure your spot. College Information Sessions

  • There are numerous colleges and universities that are holding information sessions regarding their institutions, registration processes, and financial programs. Check these out:

Rice University

Join a virtual Regional Information Session and meet an admission counselor for your area. You will learn about Rice's academic programs, groundbreaking research, vibrant student life, and affordability. Discover why we love Rice and living in the heart of Houston. August 22 - 24, 2023.

Join Cornell University, Emory University, Pomona College, Rice University, and Washington University in St. Louis for a presentation for students, families, and counselors. Come and meet admission officers from each of our respective institutions and learn more about what unites us. August 27 - 30, 2023.

An information session will be held on August 28, 2023, at 6:30 pm (light refreshments 5:45 - 6:30 pm) at Midtown High School (formerly Henry W Grady High School). In this session for students, families, and counselors, you’ll hear about amazing opportunities and resources, as well as learn about our admissions processes and financial programs from the ten highly selective colleges.

JUNIORS & SENIORS

Peachtree College Planning is hosting a free, virtual "College 101: The 5 Critical Steps to a Successful College Plan" workshop on Tuesday, August 29, Wednesday, August 30, and Thursday August 31, 2023, at 12:00 pm and 7:00 pm. This workshop will address college costs, components of "the right college fit," ways to maximize scholarships and grants, and much more! Register today at https://bit.ly/43NKviA .

 

The 2024 U.S. Senate Youth Program application window is open from August 1 to September 29. High school juniors or seniors may apply provided they meet all program qualifications as outlined by the U.S. Senate Youth Program. The application, program criteria, and informational brochures are found on the Excellence Recognitions USSYP webpage at www.gadoe.org/USSYPApplications are due by September 29 at 5:00 p.m.

FRESHMAN
During the month of September, we are dedicated to teaching students ACT- Acknowledge, Care and Tell. Knowing the signs of suicide, understanding the importance of practicing self-care or showing a friend you care, and understanding when to tell are all the first steps to saving a life.


Signs of Suicide Lesson

For the 2023-2024 school year counselors, social workers and psychologists are tasked with conducting Signs of Suicide lessons for 6th and 9th grade students during the month of September. AHS Counselors will be pushing into 9th Grade Algebra and Geometry Honors classrooms to deliver the lesson.  More information will be coming in the next week weeks.

Senior Meeting - Thursday August 24th

Seniors — mark your calendar for the Class of 2024 senior meeting. Please join us in the auditorium at the start of 5th period (students only). We will have an option for parents to join virtually. Details to come.
